Chemical Properties - pH
|
pH is a measurement of a solution's acidity or basicity. With the exception of pure water, every liquid can be classified as an acid or a base.
The pH scale goes from zero to 14, with pure water in the middle of the scale, having a pH of 7. A pH of 7 is classified as neutral. Anything less than 7 is classified as acidic. Anything greater than 7 is classified as basic. The picture below shows the location of some common solutions on the pH scale.
Acids are neutralized by bases, and vice versa. This means that when acids and bases are mixed, the pH of the resulting mixture gets closer to 7.
